Selling what's been your company for many years to an EOT is a huge step. Your role will likely change. Possibly you're stepping down completely, or perhaps just stepping back a bit.

Retirement Specialist

Selling your business means handing over control.

It also (normally) involves reduced responsibility/workload for the founder.

This may sound great.
You’ve worked long hours for many years.
It’s been stressful.
You’ve earned a proper break, right?

Yes! Nobody disputes that…but sometimes reality isn’t as enjoyable as the dream

You’ve got all the time in the world, and a big cash receipt.
You travel the world for a month. Great! What an experience!
You visit a few friends you’ve not seen in a while.
You enjoy a few extravagant experiences.
Maybe buy yourself that sporty car you’ve always wanted.
What next?

Quickly you get itchy feet.
A desire to be productive.
To be important.
To be needed.

There’s a huge hole in your life where the business used to be

Neil Williams has seen this multiple times. He’s arguably lived it himself. He can help you plan for, and come to terms with, your change in status and focus.

While Neil joined the rest of the world in adopting Zoom over the pandemic, recording a video didn’t go well for him! So he’s written the below text instead:

Selling what’s been your company for many years to an EOT is a huge step. Your role will likely change. Possibly you’re stepping down completely, or perhaps just stepping back a bit. This can be a tough adjustment for someone who’s used to being both super important, and super busy.
What will you do post sale?
Are you confident you’ll find satisfaction doing that?

Does retirement still exist?

You could say I retired from my real career 19 years ago. Yet I have been working in an area I love as well as doing many other things which I contribute to and gain a sense of satisfaction. It is down to you, what you want to get out of this precious period of your autumn time. What will your sense of purpose be?

  • Do you know when you want to retire?
  • Are you going to start a new venture?
  • Do you have a rough plan in how you will fill your time?
  • Will you feel a loss of status?
  • Will you have enough money coming in to fund whatever you want to do? (financial advisor required not me!)

We run through a number of questions to prepare you for probably the biggest transition you will have to make. We all have different retirement aspirations, family circumstances and financial pressures; assessing this early will help you plan and ensure you enjoy your retirement thoroughly.

If you are looking to retire shortly, my retirement coaching sessions help you to assess where you are now and where you want to get to.

  • What do you enjoy doing?
  • Do you still want to support the new management team?
  • Is there something you have always wanted to do and never had the time?
  • What will your new week look like without weekends?

A couple of sessions generally do the job the first one asking the questions, the second one building a plan once you have worked out your answers. A simple process which will help you blend into whatever you want your retirement to look like.
